For fans of "fear", Val basically invented the genre of psychological horror...deciding to focus on suggestion of menace and the evils of our own souls...instead of shambling Universal monsters. He produced a cycle of films in the early 40's that I don't think have ever been quite duplicated for sheer atmosphere and mood.
When they released a box set, I thought it should have been called "Poetry of Horror"...that title just seems to fit the mood of these films. The other bonus to these films are the directors he chose. Film noir legend Jacques Tourneur, Robert Siodmak and a youg unknown director making his film debut...Robert Wise.
The films:
Cat People
Curse Of The Cat People
Isle Of The Dead
Bedlam
I Walked With A Zombie
The Body Snatcher
The Leopard Man
Ghost Ship
The 7th Victim
