So just how much trouble is a blu ray set...

So over a year ago, the davis-panzer group announce that they will be making season sets in blu ray for Highlander the tv series. Not one of the top series I've been craving to get the Blu treatment, but since it was a decent price, I decided to preorder it.

This was Nov, 2008.

The set keeps getting pushed back... and back... and back.

Now we are at Dec 2009... and during this time there has been no email updates, news, etc to the customers that have preordered it. If you call the customer service number, no one answers and you get voice mail. If you tried to click on the email link in the order confirmation email you got oh so long ago... no longer valid. If you check on the status of your order online, all it says is "Shipped'... but it has said that ever since Dec 2008.

Imagine my surprise when I see on one of my dvd news sites last week that the company told them that the set was FINALLY being shipped from the manufacturers to the warehouse for distribution. The news works its way around the news sites, and people start trying to contact them to see if their orders are still valid, when to expect shipment, etc... same story... no one answers the phones, and no response to email.

After the 3rd day of trying, I actually get a humen on the phone... and tells me they shipped mine yesterday. Cool... means I will have them by the end of this week. Got them today, and I thought this journey that has lasted over a year will finally be over.

Turns out my brand new 2.0 blu ray player will not detect the menu. It just keeps playing the opening montage of scenes over and over again. However, my old profile 1.0 player DOES pick it up... the player I was getting rid of since it cant play the 1.1 and 2.0 special features.

So after all this, my NEW player can't play them, but the old one can. Ridiculous.

Man that sounds like a total shit sandwich, I was gonna get a Blu-Ray but after reading your post I'll stick to a DVD player.

Damn, that sucks. Stuff like this is why I don't have a Blu Ray player yet.

One second, blu-ray players require firmware updates (like computers) to stay on top of all the technology changes. Check out the website for the manufacturer of your player and there will probably be a firmware update available.

They are easy to install, just burn the update to a CD and put it in the player, it does the rest on it's own (depending on the model).

blu-ray menus are MUCH more complex than DVDs, so as the technology for making discs advances, the need for being able to upgrade the player without purchasing a new one becomes paramount.

I think those who have been waiting to switch can go ahead soon. The players out now load so much faster and handle non-blu-ray discs better than the older players. My best friend here in town has a couple of them and they are pretty fantastic machines...audio CDs sound awesome in them...the D/A converter is higher quality than DVD models.

I've had my Panasonic blu ray player for a couple months now ($149 on sale) and I can't believe I waited this long to pick one up!

Blu Ray's look incredible, my old DVDs even look better...and I have a model that connects to the internet, so I'm able to watch Netflix movies, purchase rentals from Amazon.com, surf Youtube, etc. Plus the firmware updates download and install automatically.

It's a great machine and I haven't found a single disc that it hasn't played

I can't see buying a blu-ray after I re-purchased all my VHS tapes in DVD format. I'm not buying them again in another format.

I'm not re-buying anything either, but since they are completely backwards compatible...it doesn't make sense to purchase anything other than a blu ray player at this point.

Wow I didnt know they needed updates like that? I'll just stay with a DVD player for now, I can live with that.

Hey as long as I can watch my Tranformers (Generation 1 Series), He-Man Series, He-Man (2001) Series, M*A*S*H*, Sanford & Son and my numerouc concert DVD's I won't upgrade either.

Blu-ray rules! I love it!!!!! I have no issues, it updates automatically as need. It rocks!!!!! As long as you got one that can update the firmware, you are set!
