Glad you guys are still hanging around! now that we've rebranded this wonderful little site (yeah, I know, it still looks like hell, it'll get fixed), figure I'd start with a "drive-in movie" suggestion.

or rather, a documentary on drive-in movie suggestion.

Easily on of THE most entertaining documentaries that I've ever watched on the film industry. It's all about "OZ-Ploitation", the Australian exploitation scene of the 70's and 80's and it's a GRAND time.

If you like boobs, beer, gore, homicidal bike gangs, wild boars...or a dude named "Max". You need to check this out.

...and while we're at it.

What is YOUR favorite Australian movie, oz-ploitation or not?

my favorite Australian film in recent years is a comedy, one that I've watched about 4 times and enjoyed it more each time:

Incredibly funny movie, takes WAY more chances than your average American comedy (secretary masturbating at her desk at work, stuff like that). But it's heart is in the right place.

Brilliant, funny and actually rather sweet.

Plus, Rose Byrne is in it and she's my favorite actress (acting, not look) right now.

Highly recommended by Mr. D.

I'm actually not big on Mad Max; it deserves all the credit it gets but for an Aussie film it didn't grab me like it did many.

Aussie cinema of the past was almost eerie in its calm. You had your ozploitation, which was also a different beast than say the Italian or US counterparts, but there was also a good display of dramas and thrillers that had a disturbing subtlety that really keeps me engaged and mystified at the same time. Peter Weir, for instance, is one of my favorite filmmakers, and he has this style nailed down. I suppose Picnic at Hanging Rock may be my favorite, although I really enjoy Peter Collinson's The Earthling featuring a final and powerful performance by William Holden. Other notable entries: Nicholas Roeg's "Walkabout," Ted Kotcheff's "Wake in Fright," the other George Miller's "Man from Snowy River," "Gallipoli (also by Weir)," Colin Eggleston's "Long Weekend," and of course Patrick .

I'm in love with Australian cinema and anything featuring the Outback. Of course they still churn out crap like Roger Christian's "Starship" and Russell Muchalay's "Razorback." On a related note, Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" was pure shit; I couldn't even make it through half of that bloated garbage.

You need to watch The Rage in Placid Lake. Hell, I want to see it again now that this thread has been revived.

I saw the first half of it last night (full movie available on YouTube, albeit the quality sucks). I was busting up and really held my interest. Sadly it was my wife's night for TV, so I had to sacrifice it when she got home. I really wanna finish it. Great characters (with great accents no less).
