I've known for years that Rick played on SBS but I never really knew how that came to pass.

It's another case of studios with multiple recording rooms. Black Sabbath was in one room recording Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, YES was next door recording Tales From Topographic Oceans.

Wakeman didn't like the direction Topographic Oceans was taking and his relationship with the band was severely strained, so when he wasn't recording his parts he was hanging out with Black Sabbath next door. It was simply a case of him being "right there" and when keyboard parts were needed he offered his services.

I always love hearing about classic albums being recorded at the same time. It reminds me of how Aqualung and Led Zeppelin IV were recorded at the same time in two different recording rooms at the same studio.

I've always wondered if Yes's close proximity to them (combined with Wakeman's presence) during the recording influenced the progressive direction they took with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

No.

Iommi started moving in a more progressive direction on Vol. 4 (listen to Wheels Of Confusion).

Even though Patrick Meehan took the production credit on SBS, Iommi was completely in charge of the entire album and all the musical ideas on that record were his. Fluff was Iommi's brainchild, as was all the other progressive leaning songs. He never saw Sabbath as just one thing and wanted to keep expanding their sound. Iommi wrote most the music, did all the arrangements, supervised the recording session and did the final mix himself.

He would have the same role on Sabotage. Iommi was also the least "wasted" of the bunch, as the other members of the band started spiraling out of control on cocaine and heroine he was left to take up the creative slack.
