So, you like 'em? Hate 'em? I like everything from the debut to Deguello a lot and El Loco is alright, after that they lost me. Eliminator was alright but after that they sucked until Antenna which was fair and Rhythmeen kicked ass (my fave) the last two were alright as well. I just wish they would re-release all of the first 6 in their original form.

Billy Gibbon's tone on Rhythmeen is thick as fuck! Mescalero has a killer tone as well.

My opinion is pretty close to yours.

My favorite albums are Deguello & Tres Hombres, those two are the only ones I still own. Tres Hombres is beyond classic, Precious & Grace is basically a metal tune.

I like 1 song on El Loco (Arrested for Driving While Blind), I liked Eliminator when it first came out, but I've been so burnt out on it that I haven't heard it in at least 20 years.

Afterburner was terrible, except for Gibbons solo on Rough Boy. I stopped paying attention at that point. I've heard most of the albums they've done since, but I've never felt inspired to the point of purchasing any.

I think the last really good song they did was "She's Just Killin' Me" from the the From Dusk Till Dawn soundtrack. They re-recorded it for Rhythmeen, but the soundtrack version was far superior.

Arrested...is on Tejas but a kick ass song. Tejas is prolly my 3rd fave after Rhythmeen and Deguello. Tres Hombres is a great album...I just wish I could find vinyl rips of the classic stuff at least, that is until they finally release them on cd.

I like 2 songs on El Loco for sure and I have to be doing something in order to listen to the whole album.

Edit: Kewl man! I just found 'em!

That's what I get for posting before checking my facts, LOL.

I think pretty much anything between 1970-1979 is awesome (though I find Tejas pretty spotty), then from 1981-1983 there were some good songs scattered amongst many failed experiments.

I never got into El Loco, I mean, of course it's funny to have songs like Pearl Necklace and Tube Snake Boogie...but was it really ZZ Top by that point? I think it was producers calling most of the shots from El Loco onwards.

I agree with the El Loco comments, the 80's stuff was rather spotty. Man, the vinyl rips I found are perfect! No popping, hissing, etc. It's great to hear these again...Tejas in particular is great to hear, it just might become my fave who knows.

Frank Beard is criminally underrated as a drummer. He kicks ass on "Tejas".

It sounds like Billy Gibbons stole Wino's gear to record "Rhythmeen"...killer ass tone.

I love me some ZZ Top, mostly the pre-80's material but even the pop stuff I can enjoy to some extent. The only album of theirs I can do without is Afterburner, everything else has at least a few good tunes.

To be honest, I do wish they'd branch out a little bit, songwriting-wise. I love what they do, but after a while the same formula just runs dry.

The first six and "Rhythmeen" are the cream of the crop IMO. I dig some of the other stuff but not even close to the aforementioned 7 albums. Afterburner had "Rough Boy" and that was just about it. That was one of the first songs I ever learned... Actually, I liked three other songs off that album but the synth and '80s Pop sheen denigrates them badly.

As time goes by, I find myself actually enjoying this tune:

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a despicable piece of pop trash that has nothing to do with ZZ Top...but I'll be damned if it isn't catchy. Plus the guitar solos are decent.

And if that gloriously terrible video doesn't make you crack a smile, you have no soul
