I went with one of my friends to see this movie today and I gotta say I'm impressed. It's one of those flicks where the effects are so consistently incredible that you forget you are watching effects. Stunningly realized and the best 3-D I've ever experienced. It's definitely groundbreaking and is going to be hard to top. This isn't "cartoonish" CGI and the short clips on TV don't do it justice. This one is worth taking the drive to the movie theater to see.

The actual plot to the film is nothing we haven't seen before, but it's so convincingly pulled off it's easy to forgive that. It's nice to see Cameron and Sigourney Weaver re-united. All around, better than I expected in every way....plus it's got Michelle Rodriguez in it....so it's not bad to look at in that regard either.

A friend just told me today he thinks it's the movie of the year. I gotta go see it.

I have no desire to see this movie. I'm not a big sci-fi/special effects fan and part of it may be the confusing story. I've watched the trailer and people have tried to explain it to me but I just don't get what the hell is going on.

My dad and brother saw it, but I'll pass. Maybe someday on cable or something.

It's basically a sci-fi variation on Dances With Wolves.

If you liked Cameron's movie The Abyss, you'll probably dig it, it's probably closest in tone to that film.

Never saw The Abyss and barely remember Dances with Wolves. Good movie, but I think I fell asleep midway through. Fell asleep watching the 1st Lord of the Rings movie too. I can't do the 3+ hour epics.

So Cameron's "Avatar" is already the #2 boxoffice hit of all time, right behind his own "Titanic," according to this past weekend's figures. This movie is just crushing everything in its path.

I still haven't seen it but I have to admit I'm now curious. The pre-release hype had me kinda sick of hearing about it before it even opened, but a lotta folks whose opinions I respect are giving it props now that they've seen it.

Besides, it looks like it would be a GREAT movie to watch stoned!! Laughing

Anyway, Cameron better enjoy his #2 all time slot while he still can, because this weekend Jackie Chan and Billy Ray Cyrus' "The Spy Next Door" comes out. I'm sure that one will be an absolute juggernaut. Laughing

I can most definitely confirm the accuracy of that statement! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Avatar is a great movie, the plot is not what I expected but for me not being much of a movie guy this one grabbed me right away. Here's hoping to a sequel.

"Avatar" officially beat "Titanic's" all time box office record as of today, according to the IMDb.

They oughta just hand Cameron the Best Picture Oscar right now and get it over with. Otherwise the entire Oscar telecast is just going to be an endless parade of movie industry types licking his balls.

Pretty good film. The lead guy kinda sucked, but overall I liked it.

(In case anyone is wondering about the rapid-fire posting, I'm simply a bored insomniac tonight Very Happy)

So I'm still wondering if I should see this. Here's why:

1. I missed seeing it in the theater.
2. Everyone who raves about it has seen it in the theater (in 3D no less).
3. The story looks positively derivative.
4. As much as this is a game-changer in the industry, the trailers look similar to Transformers on my TV.
5. It's...pretty long.

Now, once upon a time, I was a Cameron fanboy, even writing up a thesis on his filmography in High School for a non-film-related assignment. He never did me any wrong from Terminator to Titanic (I refuse to call Piranha 2 his movie). But this looks...underwhelming, I suppose, and only worth seeing beyond my peripheral vision with the illusion of a three-dimensional visual. Thoughts?

It's just like Titanic in a way, a typical James Cameron vehicle. Is it a good movie, really? No. Is it so amazing visually that it still ends up being worth watching? I think so. This movie is just as poorly written as Titanic, it's a complete ripoff of several things (Ferngully, Dances With Wolves, etc) including Cameron himself but yet, for whatever reason, it still ends up being entertaining.

Cameron certainly has never been the greatest writer, except for maybe Aliens. I revisited T2 recently and was amazed at the economy and melodrama of most of the dialogue. Some of it comes across as completely pat, something I never noticed before. But it still looks cutting edge, like nothing I've ever seen before. Same with Titanic. And The Abyss was near-great except for that heart-in-hand preachy ending (director's cut or otherwise). All this to say that I'm not surprised about Avatar being half baked in the story department.

I'll check it out but I wonder if I should wait for a chance to try it on Blu 3D.

It was an entertaining film..... wait for 3D blu-ray? Don't know if that is necessary... I saw it in the theater in 3D and that one gave me a raging headache.... I did watch it again on blu ray and it's typical Cameron - good enough and worth a viewing.

As mentioned, it is basically Dances With Wolves....... I wonder how many points Kevin Costner got....

Looks like he's making Avatar 2,3 and 4 soon and filming them at the same time..... I;ll check em out, but if 2 is a huge letdown, Ill skip 3 and 4.
