Its been awhile since popping this flick for the first time 4 or 5 years ago but I watched again a couple of nights ago and it defintately reinstated itself as something definately honorable enough for my top 5 of horror.
John Carpenter's Magnum opus film in my opinion, some of the other shit like escape from LA....not too hot. The thing is brilliant though, killer atomosphere, effects, storytelling, and badass kurt russel beard, not to mention some great quotes. I dig this film, especially while watching with my herbal friends.
I know you have been thru alot, but when you find the time, I would not like to spend the rest of winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!!!!!!

One of my top films from any genre, just a perfectly executed film.

Carpenter's finest hour!! He was unstoppable for a good four or five years (say, from HALLOWEEN thru THE THING). He's been hit and miss ever since.

The same could be said for Kurt Russel. He has some classic roles in his portfolio, but what has he done lately? He's more famous as Kate Hudson's stepdad than as Snake Pliskin. Damn shame, that is.

Well, OK, I'll give you that, but ya gotta admit the man's been on a skid for the past fifteen years at least. I mean, "Village of the Damned?" "Ghosts of Mars?" "Vampires?" Ugh.

Oh yeah, he's been disappointing me pretty consistently for years, but, that first decade in film there is pure gold.

Yeah I did know that actually, the original film is called "The Thing From Another World", I believe it's from 1940 or so (the kids are watching it in one scene of the original Halloween come to think of it) and while I like the original Carpenter's version still out does it for me.

Totally an instant classic, this is Carpenter at his best for sure, yeah your right The thing from another world, it was 1951, I just looked it up, and yes Carpenters version kicks major butt, that movie disgust and entertains in a sick and yet fun way.

Went and saw "The Thing" at a late morning matinee. It was better than I expected, though not quite the epic it should have been. The comparisons with Carpenter's flick are justified, but this movie goes for a different vibe to set itself apart.
It's more of an "in your face" creature feature than a suspense-horror film like Carpenter's version. The effects were excellent and they did a nice job of updating Bottin's visual ideas from the 1981 version. Everything is done with great reverence.
It's quite gory and they blended physical effects and CGI nicely. There are some holes in the "prequel connection" and there really isn't an ending, those two things are my biggest complaints.
But overall, if you like the original you'll at least get a kick out of revisiting the story...plus hot babe with flamethrower is always a good thing.
