I just saw "Jonah Hex" the other night...

...and y'know what? It was actually pretty good!

Seriously, I was expecting it to be an utter trainwreck given all the savage reviews and bad press it received (and the fact that it sank faster than JFK Junior when it came out in theatres this past Summer), but it was decent. Not a classic for the ages by any means, but an adequate shoot'em up/blow'em up action flick.

I think the main reason this flick failed is cuz DC Comics/Warner Bros. kept hyping the hell out of it as if it were an "event film" ala the freakin "Dark Knight," when of course Jonah is not nearly well known enough outside of comic book geek circles to justify that kind of hype. To the average movie goer, this flick might as well have been called "Jonah Who?"

I know there were a lot of behind-the-scenes problems with this flick (last minute rewrites, reshoots, the director was replaced at least once, etc., etc.) so it does have a very "unfinished" feel and a very short run time (84 minutes, I believe). I get the feeling that they cut a lot of stuff out that would've fleshed out the film more (and maybe kept it "R" rated rather than the "PG-13" they were erroneously going for) and then rushed it out to theatres.

Jonah Hex didn't NEED to be a $50 million movie. They could've easily done this same story with half or less than half of the budget, released it direct to DVD, and it probably would've been better received. Instead, it crashed and burned and became the summer's biggest box office clusterfuck. A shame, because the character had SUCH potential to be a totally BAD ASS movie and that potential is barely scratched here. This movie feels like a "rough draft," unfortunately due to its bad performance we will probably never see Jonah on the silver screen again to try and make it right!!

My little Geek Rant here is probably not going to convince anyone that "Jonah Hex" is worth seeing cuz it's already pretty much dead on arrival even on DVD. But if you need a reason to check the movie out, there's always Megan Fox in her 19th century dancehall girl/prostitute outfit:

I liked it, but it feels like the skeleton of a really cool film. It's just not long enough to really accomplish even part of the scope they were aiming for.

Some magnificent set-pieces with all the connecting tissue removed.

Your review was spot-on, all the behind the scenes issues and trying to neuter it for PG-13 really killed the potential.

Maybe one of these days they'll put out a special edition with the cut material put back...I'd watch it again for that.

I wish I was more of a movie buff...I wonder why Megan Fox wasn't on the latest installment of Transformers?

She got into it with Michael Bay. According to Bay, she's a stuck up starlet...according to Fox, Bay is a sexist asshole. They are probably both right.

Shia said in an interview that Megan couldn't handle Bay's shouting directions at her like "stick your tits out", "put your ass in the camera", stuff like that.

I'm on her side, Bay is a talentless hack and the Transformers movies are one reasons IQ's continue to drop sharply.

What can I say, I'm a Transformers freak and always have been. Although I do have to say they shoulda stuck to the original template more as far as characters and their respective mannerisms go. Even though he is wrong and I like that she stuck to her guns I wouldn't mind pulling a Michael Bay on Megan Fox either...

Megan is young enough to make me feel like a dirty old man (of course so is Mila actually).

I think I should start lusting after chicks in their late 30's like Emily Deshanel and Amy Adams.
