Turning 40 this year had an unintentional side effect, a sudden preoccupation with albums that were either recorded or released during 1970. In hindsight it appears that 1970 was one of the most fertile music periods ever, this was before any "genres" developed so bands were free to do what they wanted...and the audience were openminded enough (or stoned enough) to accept this world of musical experimentation.

In my mind, the majority of the great stuff came from the UK...it was like the heavy & progressive wave of the British invasion. So many bands seemed to magically appear that year, the number of debuts in the following list is almost staggering.

But not just heavy stuff prevailed, it was a great year for pretty much every genre of music. 1970 was just as important for jazz (Bitches Brew) as it was for the nascent heavy metal movement.

Here is just a partial list of 1970 releases (in no particular order), it was an incredible year!

I was born in '70 too. Some neat shit on that list, a lot of bands/albums I've heard OF but never actually HEARD. Maybe I oughta rectify that.
