Just read that Leon Spencer Jr. passed away today. He was a criminally underrated soul jazz organist and contemporary of Dr. Lonnie Smith and Charles Earland. Leon played regularly with Lou Donaldson and many others on the soul jazz scene. He returned to his hometown of Houston during the 70s and played locally for the rest of his life, often in tandem with legendary soul jazz guitarist Melvin Sparks.
