I like AAL b/c they're very cerebral, not just technical. As far as bands like Russian Circles and Pelican, they have TONS of groove. Scale The Summit does too but they seem to lack something to me that I can't put my finger on.

STS is good, AAL just floored me and they still do, I just want a little more groove on 'Weightless' but either way I know I'll dig it.

I'm listening to it right now. I don't have access to most videos at work.
That riff that comes in around the 2:25 mark is INSANE. This tune is fairly lyrical, it's kind of like a tech=heavy variation on Pelican. I like it.
Periphery has some insane riffs, just take a listen to their S/T album...the instrumental version that is. Misha Mansoor is a beast.

The new AAL is quite good, there are a few more techniques, in the sense that certain ones are more prominent on this album but this album is more restrained and that's odd seeing how there's a full band now. There is more electronica and sampling and some of the guitar parts sound like they've been processed through an 8-bit modulator which takes some getting used to. A lot of the leads hearken back to 70s Fusion.

Found a used copy of their self-titled this weekend, going to spin it later today once my headache goes away.

Listening to it now, it's rather dense so I think it's going to take a few spins for it to really sink in.
So far my favorite track is "Behaving Badly" which sounds like Discipline-era Crimson taken a step further. "Soraya" is beautiful as well.

"Behaving Badly" is my fave too, my fave part is that part in CAFO (you'll know which one) I really got into the guitar part but if you listen to what the drums are doing especially when it hits the snare out of time it's genius!

A really good album, Tosin is an amazing player. I prefer the clean-toned material on the record so far.

I recommend getting the Wave Of Babies single and the new album Weightless, it has more groove but overall has less clean tone stuff.

1. Te Mato 4:04 2. Semilla 2:51 3. Olvidala 2:31 4. Menta 4:59 5. Luz y Cielo 1:50
Great EP from Animals As Leaders/T.R.A.M. guitarist Javier Reyes. My only complaint is its brevity. There's not a solo in the whole lot but that's part of what makes it a good listen. It's more about texture, kind of like AAL meets Scale The Summit.
