DAVE MUSTAINE Wants To Form 'Supergroup' With METALLICA's HETFIELD, ULRICH - Aug. 10, 2011

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine was interviewed yesterday (Tuesday, August 9) by Cindy Scull of the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks. You can now listen to the 10-minute chat at this location. A couple of excerpts follow below.




On his rekindled friendship with his former bandmates, METALLICA's Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield:

Mustaine: "I've talked to Lars and James about me and David [Ellefson, MEGADETH bassist] doing a supergroup record with Lars and James. Well, James never said 'no,' but it's still kind of out there in the air. I'm gonna keep hammering on him. It's on my bucket list."

In a 2009 interview with U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine, Hetfield was asked if he was glad to see Mustaine out of METALLICA prior to the recording of the band's debut album, 1983's "Kill 'Em All". "I don't know if 'glad' is the right word, but it was necessary," he replied. "There would have been myself, Lars and [Dave] all trying to drive and it would have been this triangulated mess. It's obvious that he had the same drive as us — he went on to do great things in MEGADETH. The way things are now, the character dynamics, Lars and I are one half of the scale with Rob [Trujillo, METALLICA bassist] and Kirk [Hammett, METALLICA guitarist] on the other. They're great idea people but very good at being okay with someone else driving. It does take that, I think. They're very un-ego-driven and Lars and I are the other way, it seems. That's what I've been told. [Laughs] So back then Dave had to go."

I'd like your thoughts on this...I'll elaborate later, I'm gonna let this sink in but I wish they would've done it during the mid 90s or early 00s.

He's proposed this kinda thing for at least 12 years now. I kinda have to agree w/you Spec., as much of a Mustaine fanboy as I am, I don't know if I' care to see this at this point in time.

I love Dave too. He's really the only guy who's stuck to his guns 98% of the time. Lars and James' time to contribute something worthwhile is LONG gone. All in my opinion, of course.

I don't see it as being that interesting. If Dave decided to collaborate with some other musicians from a completely different STYLE, then I think it could have great possibilites.

These types of things really only work when your cohorts stretch your abilities...but with the Metallica guys, they've played together in the past and they aren't that dissimilar stylistically...so he should just stick to Megadeth.

Dave would never be able to share the spotlight with anyone, maybe a single album, but then I could see him blowing up, twittering how they fucked him over and then storming out.

I'd still listen to it, but I'm not really interested in it at this point. On the other hand, if he grabbed Chris Poland back up and did a fusion album, that'd be awesome.

Music with risks involved inspires me. Artists who won't venture out of their comfort zone have the opposite effect.

That's why I like Motley Crab and Risk so much b/c of the risks. TSHF is an awesome album b/c Poland was on it, I just never liked his tone though.

Dave should do an album w/Jeff Martin.

There was some good lyrics and music on that album, it woulda went over better as a Dave solo album or side project though.

I agree, but at least he didn't put out a followup entitled Re-Risk.

Ditto on both accounts. Mega-fanboy till the end, but I just can't find anything good to say about Risk. That is the biggest turd in the Megadeth punchbowl.

I love that Motley Crab album as well, but I never thought of that as risky. More like a desperate attempt to fit in with the new, grungier, gritty sound that was so popular at the time. Doing a 180 degree turn from the good time party rock to 90's serious, grunge rock was an effort to seem relevent. Risky? Sure, but reeks of desperation. Luckily for them, it was a good album. Probably not a good Motley Crue album, but better than most of the other 80's bands that tried to change their sound to fit in.

Wow, Risk slammers! I think the album has some pretty good tracks on it, it's one I like to jam still.

I bought it as a new release and didn't like it from the start. I shelved it for a long time. When I started ripping music to my computer, I gave it a fresh spin to see if maybe I was a bit harsh in my initial review. Nope. Still a clunker. I just don't like that album.

Switching styles to remain relevant is not risk-taking...in fact, it's the opposite. Sticking to your guns regardless of trends and record sales shows more heart than caving to the latest sound.

I wish I would've been there last night when Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney joined Metallica onstage...I followed the whole thing while it was happening on the Megadeth boards.

All I can say is. Wow.

Was watching these yesterday. Pretty cool that it actually finally happened. Excellent videos. While seeing them play together on the old tracks is pretty awesome, I stand my ground against the supergroup idea though.

Phantom Lord is one bad ass song I always liked the Anthrax version, Kill Em All is still a great jam too. Very nice.
