New Stamp In Honor Of The Great Miles Davis

East St. Louis cheers stamp honoring Miles Davis


The hometown of jazz legend Miles Davis is celebrating a stamp in his honor.

East St. Louis officials on Tuesday marked the release of the commemorative 45-cent stamp featuring the image of Davis, who grew up in the southwestern Illinois community.

The Belleville News-Democrat ( http://bit.ly/MpZfta) reports Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. believes the stamp will send the late trumpet player's image around the globe, furthering the city's legacy as home to great artists.

Davis' family moved to East St. Louis a year after his 1926 birth. After a career that included playing with jazz greats Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey, Davis died of a stroke in 1991.

An East St. Louis elementary school already is named for Davis, and the family home there is the focus of preservation efforts.
