You definately need GO by Dexter Gordon. And even though its not "true" jazz, Steely Dan is always good to have.

Well buddy, that list shows you already know more about jazz than 98% of the population...so, good start! Recomend me some jazz, Detuned Icon_biggrin

Some of those artists you listed were very prolific, so picking the right albums is essential. We'll dig through that a bit later, for the time being, I would suggest a few others to check out.

Johnny Griffin (saxophone) - Introducing Johnny Griffin (Blue Note), The Little Giant (Riverside)

Pharoah Sanders
(saxophone) - Karma (Impulse), Thembi (Impulse)

Thelonious Monk (piano) - Thelonious In Action (Riverside), Alone In San Francisco (Riverside)

Ben Webster (saxophone) - Meets Oscar Peterson (Verve), Soulville (Verve)

Sonny Rollins (saxophone) - Saxophone Colossus (Riverside), Newk's Time (Blue Note)

Duke Ellington (piano) - Money Jungle (Blue Note), Piano In The Background (Columbia)

Hank Mobley (saxophone) - Soul Station (Blue Note), Workout (Blue Note)

Lee Morgan
(trumpet) - Cornbread (Blue Note), Charisma (Blue Note)

Grant Green (guitar) - Street Of Dreams (Blue Note), Alive (Blue Note)

I'll have about 1000 more suggestions later. Recomend me some jazz, Detuned Lol

Fucking rad man, thanks for the suggestions, you know what? I'm actually missing steely dan stuff from my collection and never heard Dexter Gorden so I will check him.

Awesome dude! Thanks for those suggestions, keep em coming. I fucking love thelonious monk, we used to play his shit in the jazz band I played in during highschool....not sure what I find more interesting his tunes or his raging lifestyle..haha.

I have been checking out medeski martin and woods album "shack man" recently. The cool thing about alot of these records is you can find em for ultra cheap prices.

What would you suggest in the Miles Davis category? I already own Kind of Blue. Where do I go from there?

Kind Of Blue is a good place to start, though the sound he explores on that album was pretty much limited to the era between 1958-1961, he started to branch out into other territories at that point.

My suggestions for next purchases would be:

1. Miles Smiles
2. Someday My Prince Will Come
3. E.S.P.

Id also like to suggest Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, and Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet. Two completely awesome albums

^^Nice Choices^^ I'd also go with Charles Earland-Livin' Black! for starters and Chase-Ennea (it's not true Jazz/Fusion but he did work for the likes of Maynard Ferguson), and the Ennea Suite comprised of pieces dedicated to the Greek gods is fucking rad! I have to listen to it at least once a week.

UP!!!!!!

Duke Pearson - the most underrated jazz genius of all-time. Duke was the A&R guy and house arranger/composer for Blue Note records from 1962 until 1971...he was a brilliant arranger for small groups, most of the Blue Note albums during that time period were supervised by Duke.

Kenny Burrell - Chitlins Con Carne. You may know this tune from Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover...but nothing tops this. One of the most sublimely funky tunes ever recorded, Kenny Burrell's guitar tone is just beautiful and Stanley Turrentine is his usual badass self on the tenor.

I made this list for Spec...but thought it cool enough to share with anyone else interested. Just a little "starter" list of some essential jazz/fusion records, focusing primarily on bands with guitarists.

Guitar/Rock/Fusion

Tony Williams Lifetime - Believe It (1975) - guitarist: Allan Holdsworth
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Between Nothingness & Eternity: Live (1973) - guitarist: John McLaughlin
Billy Cobham - Spectrum (1973) - guitarist: Tommy Bolin
Lonnie Liston Smith - Astral Traveling (1971) (no guitar)
Bobby Hutcherson - San Francisco (1970) (no guitar)
Grant Green - Alive! (1970) - for a taste of Grant's funky stuff.
Grant Green - Matador (1967) - for a taste of Grant's more straight ahead stuff
Barney Kessel - Feeling Free (1969) - chops out the wazoo....
John McLaughlin - Extrapolation (1968)
Gary Burton - Duster (1967) - guitarist: Larry Coryell
Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue - (1961) - this one is alot earlier, but a stone classic.

McLaughlin has quickly become a favorite of mine in the short time I've been on this road of jazz discovery.

I'm also really diggin' the Tony Willimas Lifetime.

Groovy! By the way, John McLaughlin was in the earlier incarnation of Tony Williams' Lifetime. The best album with McLaughlin is this one:

This was a fierce band. Guitar, organ & drums.

For someone's that just dipping his toes into jazz piano waters, what's your thoughts on this album?...

Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane - The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings 2cd set.

Recomend me some jazz, Detuned 61aiPwBiKpL._SL500_AA300_

The price is right for me and the samples sound decent.

Jonah was a very solid player, got his start with Stuff Smith in the early 30's (they recorded the stoner classic "Here Comes The Man With The Jive"). Primarily the albums you will see used are his 50s records, they are fine straight-ahead swing dates, though a little bit will go along way as they are all fairly similar.

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I can recommend a few of my personal favorite jazz records:

Horace Silver Quintet-Song For My Father
Roy Ayers-Virgo Vibes (I really dig jazz vibraphones)
Art Blakey Quintet-A Night At Birdland
Dave Brubeck Quartet-Time Out
Stuff Smith-Cat On A Hot Fiddle
Jackie McLean-Swing Swang Swangin'

Hey Shawn, is Curtis Fuller worth spending money on? I was thinking on starting with "The Opener."

I prefer him as a sideman to his leader dates. Nothing wrong with any of them, but I wouldn't consider his stuff "essential". The Opener is worth it for the Mobley tracks.

Ok, thx. That's why I asked you and I figured The Opener would be the one to get b/c I knew Mobley was on it and Mobley has been my fave Jazz guy as of late.

How about some recommendations for Wes Montgomery (or similar guitar stylings) that won't break the bank?
