FUCK "THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!"
My wife discovered that f*ckin "Twilight-Lite" show a couple of weeks ago and was so enthralled with it that she watched it all the way thru (3 or 4 seasons' worth) in a matter of days. While I was at work, "Vampire Diaries." I come home from work, "Vampire Diaries.". After dinner, "Vampire Diaries" again. I have no idea why my wife liked "Twilight" so much, nor do I understand the fascination with this ripoff soap opera. Seriously fellas, WORST. SHOW. EVER.
...and just to add insult to injury, they spun off a couple of the characters from "Vampire Diaries" into their own show, "The Originals," so she's added that to her viewing slate as well.
...and yet I get the stink-eye when I tell her I'm going upstairs to watch a "Simpsons" rerun. Wimmen folk!! Sheesh!!
Lol I hear ya. I got one worse over here for you: AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. My wife is nothing like these chicks yet she can't get enough of it. The lame humor, the multiple uses of "bitch," the snarky attitudes, the dimestore philosophy, the pretense, the overt enthusiasm, and worst of all--these chicks are all fucking ugly. Everytime she throws it on I grab my headphones.
I don't get women, how they embrace complete mediocrity on film and TV. There is so much out there with greater reward. Shows like Vampire Diaries and Next Top Model and Gossip Girl (okay, so I sorta got sucked into that one) are best left for inducing medical comas. NO, NO, NO! ANTM is the BEST unintentional comedy EVER! I used to watch that show all the time and it just cracked me up how overly serious these girls took themselves. If you view it with that mindset, its a very enjoyable show....the photography can be really cool, too. I never took it as a serious show............ I don't know, Joe...I have a hard time keeping my heart from turning black and cold whenever it's one...

| Sorry, I like The Vampire Diaries and it's about 10,000 times better than Twilight. The plots are just ridiculously convoluted, the rules change every few episodes, they delight in killing off EVERYBODY...then find a loophole to bring them back. It's completely ridiculous, but it's also a blast if you just enjoy it for the pulp fiction that it is. Plus it has babes galore...
I also watch The Originals.

And Next Top Model. It's okay, you can admit it.

| Pfffft. Asylum films > Vampire Diaries. Any day of the week 'n twice on Sunday. But seriously....my dislike of the show may be due to simply being burnt out on the whole vampire thang. I liked vamps better when they were soulless, bloodsucking hell spawns, not sensitive, misunderstood creatures with feelings. I blame Anne Rice... | |

LOL! I am somewhat with you on that... but Walking Dead is also a show the "hip kids" watch these days..... I don't have HBO (got rid of it when Sporanos ended and haven't missed it) so I have yet to see an episode of Game of Thrones. I watched the first episode of Breaking Bad... thought it OK, but didn't keep enough of my attention to binge-watch it. I have heard it is good. BTW - I did like The Heat, funny flick. Watched Continuum the other night - best season yet. One episode left. I really hope they don't cancel the show!!!!

| Breaking Bad takes a few episodes to get into the groove, once it sinks in it is an intense show. Very smart television.

| Saw some great Sci-Sorta-Fi recently:
Gravity - does it hold up on a second viewing? Yes and sort of no. Visually, it still takes my breath away, being almost everything I've ever wanted in a movie set in space. I plan on watching this repeatedly. My biggest quibble is the bombastic score. I understand the need to have it there, accenting the otherwise near-silent action taking place in a vaccum. However, I want more realism than that. Give me an extra track with no score and really put me in the action. There's also a bit more histrionics, mild as they are, that don't belong. Finally, the cheap metaphors of such obvious nature, especially in the end, are forced and unnecessary. I guess what I really want is something much more straight-forward and objective, but I can't have everything. Still a great and beautiful ride.
Apollo 13 - one of my space favorites, and I don't care how much it waves a flag (which really isn't much if you think about it), it's still a moving and convincing account of human survival in the most hostile environment. It also has one helluva launch sequence! Having read the book by Jim Lovell, this get pretty authentic with only a handful of dramatizations, mostly character oriented, that thankfully don't water down the actual incident. None of the crew should have survived that flight, and it's astonishing how they and those on the ground pulled it off. Ron Howard's best film, although I've yet to see other key titles of recent. Memorable score by James Horner.

I'll probably start ep 2 one of these days Ep 2 is where it really began for me. The pilot was great, I felt, but I wasn't really sold on the story. Then something major happens in ep2 that really sets things in motion. The ensuing chaos unnerving.

| Been watching some vintage kid stuff with my boys on Netflix the past few nights..."C.H.O.M.PS." and "Short Circuit 2." Tonight I'm gonna introduce them to Joe Dante's "Explorers." | |

| I don't even want to think about how many times I watched C.H.O.M.P.S. on HBO when I was a kid. Another one from near the same era was "Oh Heavenly Dog" and I probably watched that one 20 times as well. I've started watching season 3 of GRIMM, there were a few series I held off on watching this year until they completed, so I can then binge watch them. | |

| Yeah, when we first got cable in '80 or '81 "C.H.O.M.P.S." was on HBO constantly, so I saw it a ton of times. It's aged terribly of course, but my boys thought it was funny.
...and seeing it again after 30+ years reminded me of my middle school crush on Valerie Bertinelli (who looks like she must've been about 18 when she made this flick)....she was my dream girl back then!

| True story - I originally became familiar with Van Halen BECAUSE of my late 70s crush on Valerie.

I remember my Mother bought me some TV magazine at the store because it had Valerie on the cover. Inside was a picture of her and Eddie and the only thing I thought was "who is that long-haired freak messing with my girl?!". I was furious...I'm sure my Mother was rolling on the floor laughing. That was the first time I remember seeing the name "Van Halen" anywhere (this was probably 1978 or 79). Valerie was my "runner-up" crush, my main love at the time was Lindsay Wagener from The Bionic Woman.

| Bionic Woman - nice! I was a into Linda Carter back then....
Season Finale of Continuum - best season yet! The first 2 seasons were great Sci-Fi, but they really took it to the next level in Season 3.
Since Seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix, I am assuming Season 3 will show up soon for streaming.

| Wife & I just finished the BBC Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth. Just as wonderful as I remember it. A lot of people hemhaw over the near-six-hour length, but really it's six episodes to be viewed like the mini-series it is. Also it moves at an incredible clip, faithful to the novel, and wonderfully acted against the most scrumptious settings. I was a fan of this in high school so it was nice to revisit it, especially on Blu Ray nonetheless. The quality and restoration is outstanding, almost like watching a different film altogether. Literary and history buffs will find this delicious. | |
