| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]KIRK HAMMETT Says METALLICA Is Working On Secret Project - Feb. 10, 2011 METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed to RollingStone.com in a brand new interview that the band will head back into the studio in May to begin a new project. "We want to record it in two weeks," Hammett said. "We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a METALLICA record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide METALLICA album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen." METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich hinted in an interview that the band plans to enter the studio this spring and begin working on material for its 10th album. Ulrich first told The Pulse Of Radio that the group was thinking of getting back to work in "March or April" and made similar comments to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, telling the paper, "In the past, we would be fed up with METALLICA whenever we returned home after a gigantic world tour, but this time it's different." Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio that the band is having such a good time lately that it doesn't want to take several years off between records like before. "Sometimes after these marathon tours that we go on, we end up really needing some time away. But right now there's such a good vibe in the band — everybody's just really having a good time, appreciating each other, appreciating METALLICA, that I don't think it's gonna be a year," he said. "My best guess would be we'll probably get back to it in the springtime, start piecing some riffs together, play some songs, have some fun, kind of approach it without sort of real deadlines or any of that type of stuff." METALLICA's turmoil during the early 2000s was well-documented in the film "Some Kind Of Monster", but Ulrich told the Danish paper that the band members' relationship has changed over the years. He explained, "It helps our relationships that we've all got families and children and they all get along with each other. We really like each other at the moment. There were a few years when things were really bad . . . the fact that we have something to talk about other than tonight's setlist is or if someone made a mistake during yesterday's show makes a big difference." Although the band has cut back on its touring schedule, it still played more than 200 shows in 45 countries in support of 2008's "Death Magnetic" album. Ulrich said, "Of course it's still hard to play that many shows, but the older you get, the less you take success for granted . . . It's awesome that a bunch if semi-old farts like us can still travel around the world and thousands of people wanna share that experience with us." METALLICA will next headline the "Big Four" concert on April 23 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, also featuring SLAYER, ANTHRAX and MEGADETH. The single U.S. date is the result of popular demand after the four bands went on a wildly successful seven-date European run last year, with more shows possible. I'm not much for Met but Man I hope it's something w/Dave or The Presidio stuff. | |

| My guess is an EP of some sort, maybe a followup to Garage Days. Recording in 2 weeks sounds like they are going for a "live in the studio" type thing. I'd like to hear Metallica just knock some stuff out...instead of spending 13 months recording an album. | |

| Maybe but Kirk did say it was not a 100% Metallica thing so maybe a Big Four project a la Roadrunner United? | |

| I doubt it'll be a united thing, though that would be interesting. Personally, even though Death Magnetic was an ok album, new Metallica just doesn't appear all that appetizing. | |

| When a new Metallica comes out, I'm sure I'll check it out, but if they never released another album I wouldn't really notice. Still dig them, still think they released some great stuff...but the feelings are all nostalgia for me.

| Never been much of a fan at all, in fact I like their stuff from 'Load'-'St. Anger' the best. I'll still check it out, especially if it has Dave in it somehow. | |

| I actually got into Metallica after I had already heard Riot, Motorhead, Witchfinder General, Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate...so they weren't quite as impressive right out of the gate for me as they were for many of my friends.
I had never heard of Metallica until I saw Ride The Lightning on the new release wall at the record store, I bought it as a blind purchase because it was cheap...promotional deal of $5.99 for the LP if memory serves. I'm pretty sure I owned Show No Mercy & Haunting The Chapel beforehand...and as intense as Fight Fire With Fire is...it's not nearly as intense as Chemical Warfare.

This is exactly the same way it happened for me, I was already deep into Slayer by the time I got the Creeping Death single, which while it still blew me away, it wasn't heavier than what I already had. Or the demos I was getting through tape trades. All that aside, I still like KEA and RTL a good bit.

| Ride The Lightning is definitely my favorite, with KEA following close behind.
I also love the original Garage Days EP.

| I've grown to appreciate the first 4 albums a lot more, I had to get over my prejudices about 'em. The first two are my faves. As far as the early stuff I listened to No Life 'Til Leather, Ron's 1982 Garage Demo, Metal Up Your Ass & Power Metal a lot and still do. Those are my faves. | |

| Another Garage Dayz/cover album-type-thingamabobber would be cool I suppose. Something with Dave or anyone from the "Big Four" tour would be pretty big news and hard to keep secret. Eh, who knows. Anything's possible. | |

That would be cool, but there's too many egos involved.

| Quote: A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed. Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week. A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together. Who knows if it's management, the record label or James & Lars themselves, but it really does seem like a dick move to release their album on the s ame exact day as Megadeth. They'll say everything is cool between them, then pull a stunt like this. Really juvenille if you think about it. | |

| I think it's payback, for years Dave essentially mirrored whatever Metallica was doing stylistically on the next Deth album.
Metallica goes uber-technical on Justice...Rust In Peace comes out...Metallica goes stripped down and more commercial...Countdown comes out...etc.

| Nah, that was just Dave reminding them all where they truly learned how to play guitar, James didn't even play in the very early incarnations of Met. | |

| I was just fooling around really.
I've always kind of felt sorry for Hammett, he never even played rhythm on most of the Metallica records, all the early ones he just did solos and James played all the rhythm guitar. It was either the Black Album or Load when he was first recorded on anything other than solos.
If you think about it, that's very little of the total running time of all their recordings, Kirk never got to do much in that band. But he collects the big fat paychecks so I'm sure that helps smooth his ego. LOL.
